In early 2013, the Diakonessenhuis opened its new Emergency Care Center in Utrecht. The Spoedzorgcentrum is located in the heart of the city, next to the existing hospital. This center houses the latest medical care facilities, including a new high-tech operating complex with 9 operating rooms, the intensive care unit, and the medium care unit with 16 beds, the emergency department with 14 treatment rooms, the general practitioner post with 8 treatment rooms, the service pharmacy, and a nursing ward with 69 beds for surgical patients. Additionally, there is a separate wing that houses a knowledge and conference center.

The new Emergency Care Center is designed in such a way that care is brought to the patient instead of the other way around. With one elevator movement, the patient is immediately on the right department; time is often a crucial factor when people’s health is at stake. The interior is open, well-organized, and patient-friendly, with maximum comfort for patients. The necessary high-tech facilities are discreetly concealed, which can contribute to reducing anxiety and enhancing well-being. The wide corridors and bright colors also contribute to this atmosphere. Large photos of the city of Utrecht hang on the walls.

One Service Counter

Based on the philosophy that good collaboration with healthcare partners leads to innovation in care and better service for the patient, the new Emergency Care Center facilitates intensive cooperation between the hospital’s emergency department and the general practitioner’s office. They share one counter where they work together. Residents of the city of Utrecht can now visit one service counter from where they can quickly access the appropriate healthcare provider.
