In collaboration with H. Jan Tennekes, Gortemaker Algra Feenstra has developed a structural plan in which an expansion of maximum 11,000 m2 can be realized over two levels. The plan envisions a ring around the existing buildings.
The design of the first expansion encompasses 8,000 m2, coupled with a renovation of 2,800 m2. In the expansion, there is a ground floor outpatient treatment center, an emergency department (combining emergency care and general practitioner’s post), and various outpatient clinics. On the upper floor, there is an expansion of the operating room complex, the central sterilization department, various outpatient clinics, and the new administrative wing.
Due to the main traffic route and waiting areas being located along the interior façade, there is always a view of the existing building from the new construction. This ensures proper orientation for patients and staff and provides ample daylight in the public spaces.
In continuation of the existing passage, a new entrance has been constructed. Through the use of multiple rising canopies, the hospital has gained a strong new entrance.
