The concept of the Waterland Hospital designed by our firm was adopted to save time. Although IJsselland became larger, the expandable and flexible layout of the basic design indeed allowed the preparation phase to be completed within a year and a half, achieving the set goal. The site was minimal for the new hospital; despite that, as much consideration as possible was given to expansions, especially for the research and treatment departments. These departments are situated in a way that linear expansion is possible without disrupting the functioning of the existing organization. The IJsselland Hospital consists of four T-shaped buildings on either side of a glass-covered central passage. The compact layout greatly reduces walking distances, allowing patients, staff, and visitors to easily navigate. On the ground floor, the outpatient clinic is situated in a square on one side of the passage. On the other side, the radiology, physiotherapy, and emergency department are located. The first floor houses the kitchen, staff restaurant, administrative wing, laboratories, central sterilization, and operating department.

Above the technical level, there are the nursing departments, which are divided into three nursing units of 18 beds each due to the T-shape of the building blocks.
In 2010, Gortemaker Algra Feenstra renovated the Oncology department. Among other changes, an extension was constructed to house the oncology day treatment. This provided more space for patients and caregivers. Additionally, a family annex relaxation room was set up, and extra single rooms with accommodation options were created.
