A new police station in the heart of Hilversum
The location, framed by the surrounding streets Groest, Spuisteeg, and Kampstraat, is surrounded by mixed-use buildings and shops. To make optimal use of the available space, an underground parking garage has been constructed beneath the building and inner courtyard. The compact and efficient design of the building contributes to a functional and secure working environment for the police and its partners.
Transparency and connection
The modular façade is transparent where possible and closed where necessary. Skylights provide daylight in workspaces where privacy is essential. Wooden slats filter the light, offer protection against direct views, and ensure security for operable sections. This approach brings the small-scale character of the city center into the building, making it better connected to its surroundings and the community.

Modern and sustainable
The police station is built with a sustainable vision. A predominantly wooden construction was chosen, contributing to circular and environmentally friendly building practices. The combination of wood and a contemporary design makes the police station a distinctive and future-proof building for Hilversum.
Interior: colour, material, and experience
The interior design aligns with the vision of sustainability and well-being. The use of color aids orientation and contributes to a pleasant working environment. Recognizable blue and green tones create a dynamic and structured look. The tactile experience of materials plays an important role in the overall perception: soft materials such as carpet tiles and acoustic wall coverings provide comfort in workspaces, while robust materials like concrete and wood give a bold and pure appearance in high-traffic areas.
Healthy and flexible environment
For both users and visitors, it is important that the building provides a healthy working environment. The design includes a large atrium that facilitates efficient and informal collaboration. Passing each other at the coffee machine naturally leads to spontaneous interactions between different disciplines. Large glass surfaces allow daylight to enter and create visual connections between various zones. Plants and natural materials contribute to the well-being of users. The restaurant serves as a central meeting point and is designed with warm colors, wooden accents, and flexible furnishing options, allowing the space to be easily adapted to future needs.
Identity and collaboration
To strengthen the identity of the police and the region, space has been created for graphic elements and artworks. The theme ‘…from the air’ has been translated into wall graphics that emphasize the connection between the police and their working area. This contributes to a sense of pride and recognition within the building.
With this redevelopment, Hilversum has gained a modern, functional, and sustainable police station that not only provides a safe and efficient workplace for the police but also creates a welcoming and accessible environment for visitors.
