Sustainable Design
Sustainability was a key focus from the very beginning. The choice was made for a structure built from Dutch larch wood. The pavilion is designed as a table construction: a flat roof supported by wooden columns, connected to the existing main building. This eliminated the need for additional bracing, as wind loads are absorbed by glass fins on the interior side of the façade. The integration of circular materials, energy-efficient lighting, and permeable paving makes the entrance future-proof.
Architecture and Experience
The entrance hall is designed with an open and light structure, with wood playing the leading role. The underside of the roof features a continuous slatted structure, creating a seamless transition between indoors and outdoors while also enhancing acoustics. The glass façade is carefully integrated between the wooden slats, and the rounded columns give the structure a natural appearance.
Harmony with the Surroundings
In addition to the entrance hall, the surrounding area has also been redesigned. The landscape architect was involved from the early design phase to create a logical connection between the hospital and the outdoor space. The new Kiss & Ride zone and improved routing ensure a smooth flow of visitors.
The new entrance hall of Rijnstate is not just a functional improvement but also a symbol of the hospital’s sustainable ambitions—a place where architecture, nature, and healthcare come together to provide a welcoming and accessible arrival experience.
